“YOU ARE WHAT YOU SAVOR” –

This proverbial maxim forms the basis of treatment with fruit and vegetable extracts, also known as Phyto therapy. Plant products have palliative and potent curative properties. Being natural in origin, they cause no side effects. Instead these products act as therapeutic or prophylactic medicines.

In fact each and every fruit and vegetable has incredible curative properties, and offers a natural way to good health. Fruits and vegetables act as scavengers to our body, and drive away toxic and harmful wastes. They nourish our body with pure water, sugar, vitamins, minerals, proteins, fibers, aromatic compounds and lots of other micro-nutrients. Researchers have proved their excellent power to prevent and cure a large number of diseases like- arthritis, high cholesterol, hypertension, osteoporosis, diabetes, asthma and more. Few examples –

It was found that eating five or more apples a week was linked to better lung function. Those who ate apples had a lung capacity higher than those who did not eat apples.

Vegetable is not far behind as far as nutrition and curative properties are concerned. They are also packed with nutrients, but the dark, bright-colored ones seem to have the most nutrients. One is advised to eat colored vegetables and fruits so as to get a number of vitamins, minerals and trace elements like copper, zinc, selenium etc. They protect us from the number of diseases. To derive maximum benefit, vegetables should be used fresh in raw form or in the form of juices of single or two-three vegetables.

There are three principal components of food –

1. Proteins

2. Fats

3. Carbohydrates

All three are used as fuel (energy) for growth and maintenance of the body.

Protein and carbohydrate supply the almost same amount of energy i.e. 4 calories per gram. Fat provides 9.3 calories per gram. Fat and carbohydrate can be freely consumed, but a good deal of protein in the diet must be conserved as building material.

Besides these three basic components, essential substances that can not be synthesized in the body have to be supplied ready made. These are –

VITAMINS

Water soluble vitamins -

- Vitamin A

- Vitamin C

- Vitamin B- Complex

Fat soluble vitamins -

- Vitamin D

- Vitamin K

- Vitamin E

MINERALS

- Copper (Cu)

- Zinc (Zn)

- Ferrous (Fe)

- Manganese (Mn)

- Magnesium (Mg)

- Calcium (Ca)

- Selenium (Se)

A balanced diet constitutes all the above substances (protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins and minerals) in the right proportions. You can get all of these nutrients very easily from fruits and vegetables.
